Psychiatrist charged in child porn raid

As reported in the Journal Sentinel

A psychiatrist who specialized in children and adolescents has been charged with multiple counts of possession of child pornography.

Eric B. Schwietering, who saw roughly 60 patients a week as an outpatient psychiatrist at Cornerstone Counseling Services in Brookfield, was charged in Milwaukee County Circuit Court on Tuesday with seven counts of possession of child pornography and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia, court records show.

Police seized more than a hundred pornographic video cassettes and DVDs, his computer, and pipes and metal screens commonly used to smoke crack from a home in the 400 block of N. 3rd St. last week, records show.

Schwietering, 40, had worked at Cornerstone for more than two years, according to John Wirkus, president of Cornerstone's board of directors.

All of his patients are being referred to other doctors, Wirkus said.

A 40-year-old child psychiatrist is facing child pornography charges. Police said a house guest using a computer at Eric Schwietering's condominium came across some obscene pictures of young children. That person called police.

Police said they are not suggesting any of Schwietering's patients were in the photos on the computer. His clinic, Cornerstone Counseling Services, was unaware of his arrest until 12 News called it Monday. State regulators said his license is in good standing.

Ryan Mudgett, who called police, said he hopes this arrest keeps Schwietering away from children. "Who's to say he isn't interviewing or counseling small children and stuff in his office behind a closed door, by themselves?" Mudgett said.
