Ithaca NY Psychiatrist turns in license

As reported in the Post Standard of Syracuse, NY

An Ithaca psychiatrist accused of hugging and kissing a patient last year has turned in his medical license.

Dr. Michael R. Glass, 63, of 1345 Slaterville Road, surrendered his license to settle charges that he had physical contact of a sexual nature with a patient, according to the state Board for Professional Medical Conduct.

Glass practiced homeopathy, an alternative form of medicine. While seeing a female patient in his office on Dec. 14, Glass provided medical care that failed to meet accepted standards, according to the board.

Glass was accused of telling the woman she was sexy and beautiful, touching her inappropriately, telling her they would make good sexual partners, and kissing and hugging her.

After the woman left the doctor's office, he sent her e-mails and left messages on her telephone answering machine, apologizing and threatening suicide, according to the board. The doctor disregarded attempts by the patient's friends to get him to stop contacting her, according to the board.

The board charged him with three specifications of misconduct: having physical contact of a sexual nature with a patient; willfully harassing, abusing or intimidating a patient either physically or verbally; and moral unfitness.

In a signed document, Glass asked the board for permission to surrender his license on the grounds that he did not contest the first specification.

A license surrender order approved by the board takes effect Tuesday.

Glass had agreed in May to a board request to stop practicing until the case against him was resolved.
