Court date set for psychiatrist accused of molesting boys

From the San Mateo County Times

Dr. William Ayres, the child psychiatrist accused of molesting dozens of pre-adolescent boys in San Mateo County for decades, will return to San Mateo County Superior Court for his preliminary hearing on Aug 7.

The hearing, set today in court, will take place at 9 a.m.

Prosecutor Melissa McKowan told the judge that she estimated the hearing would last about a half-day.

Ayres has pleaded not guilty to a total of 21 counts of lewd and lascivious acts against seven children younger than 14.

Prosecutors, who have worked with police since Ayres' arrest to expand the case against the child psychiatrist, previously used court appearances to bring additional charges against the him. However, during today's brief court appearance, no further charges were filed.

Defense attorney Doron Weinberg stated at Ayres' last appearance that he plans to file a motion invalidating the search warrant upon, which the San Mateo County district attorney's office has built its entire case. Today, Weinberg told reporters outside of court that he would file the motion after the preliminary hearing.

Prosecutors claim that Ayres molested at least 39 people, but are only filing charges against the child psychiatrist based on the claims of seven men who fall within the legal stature of limitations for child molestation cases. State law requires that molestation charges be brought before the accuser turns 29 or that the alleged crime occurred after Jan. 1, 1988.
