Timeline: Rebecca Riley Murder Case

As reported By Fox TV 25 in Boston

June 2005

Michael Riley allegedly sexually assaulted Carolyn's 13-year-old daughter. DSS was aware of the alleged incident, and knew that the visit between Michael Riley and his family occurred in violation of a judge's order for Riley to stay away from his kids other than in supervised visits with DSS. That order was prompted by allegations that in June 2005 he molested his teenage stepdaughter. Despite the allegations, his sister said she allowed him to receive court approval to babysit her two children because they were perfectly safe with him.

October 2005

The attorney for New England Medical Center psychiatrist Dr. Kayoko Kifuji, J.W. Carney, said the psychiatrist was "shocked and devastated" at the Dec. 13 death of the little girl, whom she had treated for 18 months. "Dr. Kifuji did absolutely nothing wrong from a medical perspective. She gave an appropriate prescription and monitored it," he said. "She absolutely did not overprescribe."

January - June, September - November 2006

Employees at the Johnson Early Childhood Center where Rebecca Jeanne Riley, 4, was a student, are alerted to her physical and mental state.

May 2006

Rebecca's school nurse, social worker and pharmacist all had expressed concerns to Kifuji about the girl's medication, according to police. The therapist from South Bay Mental Health Center in Weymouth later told police that she was concerned by the type and amount of medication prescribed for Rebecca and that Kifuji expressed similar concerns in a phone conversation in May, according to an affidavit in support of the couple's arrest that was written by State Police investigators and released Tuesday (February 6).

July 2006

DSS dismissed one 51A complaint of abuse and neglect in June 2006 and another in July 2006. It upheld another stemming from the choking incident, DSS Spokesperson Denise Monteiro said. Two of the complaints were filed by Rebecca's social worker, according to an affidavit filed in Hingham District Court supporting the murder charges.

August 14

Herald - Kifuji made a note of a phone call received from a pharmacist at Walgreen's in Weymouth.

The pharmacist told Kifuji "She (Carolyn Riley) always has excuses that she is very low on Clonidine."

August 15

Between Aug. 15 and Nov. 27, the Rileys obtained 15 refills of Clonidine, the drug that eventually killed Rebecca, from a Walgreens in Weymouth, the affidavit said. Michael Polzin, a spokesman for Walgreens, said the drugstore chain was contacted by a State Police officer who said the company is not under investigation. "We are deeply saddened to hear about this," Polzin said. "As far as the medication that was taken, we filled a valid prescription authorized by the patient's physician, and all of the appropriate drug information and directions were given to the family."

September – November 2006

Authorities said Rebecca's 10-day prescriptions for Clonidine were filled early on multiple occasions last fall. The nurse at Rebecca’s school begins to notice her increased inability to be active. The nurse observes Rebecca in gym class, noting that she appeared barely awake.

December 13, 2006

Rebecca Riley is found dead next to her parents' bed. Investigators find seven Clonidine pills. According to the pharmacy, she should have had 75 pills left.

An autopsy finds that Rebecca died from a lethal combination of several prescription drugs, including a fatal dose of one she was being given attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
